Our County Commissioner designate
Kate Royse was a Brownie and Guide in Gloucestershire. She then moved to Wiltshire where she became a Young Leader with 1st Blunsdon Guides and got her first taste of overseas travel going on the Iceland International Jamboree.
She started as an adult leader when she went to university in Aberystwyth becoming assistant guider with 9th Aberystwyth Guides. They had a fantastic time camping at ‘Bev’s’ Farm and overnighting in the church hall at Borth (and yes it did rain all the time!!!).
She then took a break for a few years while she continued her studies working long field seasons in Labrador, Canada. After getting a ‘proper’ job at the British Geological Survey in Keyworth, she saw a small ad in the Keyworth News asking for help with Guides; this restarted her Guiding career. She took on 4th Keyworth Guides as leader over 10 years ago and has never looked back. She was asked to join the division team as they were short of an outdoor activity advisor and soon after that became commissioner for Wolds Division. This is a job that she has really loved doing and the five years has just flown by.
Three years ago Kate was lucky enough to be invited onto Girlguiding UK’s council, which she says is amazing. This February the council will be doing its most important job, selecting the new Chief Guide - in itself an awesome task.
Kate says “I am delighted to have been asked to be Nottinghamshire’s next county commissioner, it’s the biggest challenge in guiding I have ever faced, and I am really looking forward to getting to know you all and taking Guiding into its next 100 years!”
