What a finale!

Our centenary year drew to a close with the main gathering in Nottingham’s Old Market Square involving over 4,000 members as well as several other smaller events around the county.

The Market Square evening started with a dance warm-up led by Amy Godsmark and was introduced by Trent FM’s Emma Caldwell. Then came performances from Nottinghamshire Guiding’s Got Talent winners; The Six Strummers from East Bridgford Guides, Candice Curnow Newland from Wollaton, The Candy Girls from Burton Joyce Guides, Emily Hodkinson from Woodthorpe and Lucy Slater from Bingham Brownies with vocal backing from Kinoulton Guides. Then Rosanna Smith O’Brien from Bulwell sang and the audience joined in ‘Happy Birthday to Guiding’ before local boy band Hit Parade performed.

We now look forward to the next 100 years!

WALKING IN THE RAIN

Despite the weather, 29 determined walkers set out on Sunday morning, 3rd October, on the tenth and final stage of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s year-long journey along the Robin Hood Way.

The final section was a five-mile walk through Sherwood Forest into Edwinstowe village and was the culmination of the challenge devised by Walking Advisor, Jenny Wheeldon, to complete the 105-mile trail in sections during Centenary year.

Eight members have completed the full trail during the year including two guides and two leaders from 4A Mansfield, St. John's Guides. In total all the walkers covered 2713 miles during the 10 sections of walk.

The final group were met at Edwinstowe village hall by Robin Hood and celebrated with a buffet lunch and a special cake.

KNOTTS 2010 KNOCKOUT!

Nearly 1200 Brownies, Guides and Senior Section members had a fantastic Centenary camp at Walesby over the Bank Holiday weekend. “It’s the best camp I’ve ever been on” claimed Katie from Alpine Butterfly. And 250 Rainbows and Brownies enjoyed their visit on Sunday too. The camp culminatied with an  “It’s a Knockout” competition on Monday morning when much hilarity was heard.

Many, many thanks to Rosemary, Gillian and their team for organising yet another brilliant Centenary event.

During the weekend £65.05 was raised for the Pakistan Flood Relief fund.

Were you there?

Around 4000 Guiders from around the Midlands accepted the invitation of the Chief Commissioner to the “Thank You” Garden Party at Himley Hall, Dudley. Everyone, including hundreds of Guiders from Nottinghamshire put on their summer finery and enjoyed picnics and other activities in the grounds of the 18th century manor house.

Despite the somewhat mixed weather an enjoyable afternoon was had by all with many guiders taking the opportunity to catch up with old friends.

The Seat is completed

On Saturday 17th April around one thousand Girlguiding Nottinghamshire members met to celebrate the opening of our Centenary Seat sculpture in Rufford Park. Thanks are due to Sara Pearce for superb management of the project on behalf of the county; she even managed to organise the sunny weather on the day!

Sara would like to say a big “THANK YOU” to all who came and made it such a wonderful day. She also commented “The staff in the park were impressed by the good behaviour, ready parking fees and leaving NO litter. Well done!”

A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADER

By the time you read his, Guiding will have started its celebrations with parties around the country marking the centenary of the Crystal Palace rally when Girl Guiding began.  Our own event to start the year long celebrations is on the 19th September when thousands of you will be there to join in the fun and have, what promises to be, a wonderful day.

However you and your girls intend to celebrate during the coming year, I hope you are proud to be part of this game we call Guiding.

I am sure many other girls and young women will also want to become part of our movement. Please encourage anyone who asks you about us to come along and see what we do. Remember, more leaders mean that we can offer more girls the opportunity to enjoy Guiding.

Also a big “Thank you” in advance to you, the Guiders; it is you that will make the centenary a truly memorable year for the girls and young women in Girlguiding Nottinghamshire.

2nd Calverton Brownies have raised an impressive £236.00 for the Railway Children, by filling Smartie tubes with coins, selling Birthday cards, and by holding a Pyjama Party Sleepover to celebrate completing their project. They did lots of the activities from the pack, including making Dreamcatchers, doorhangers, and shelters.
