Water Activities

Chloe Pilbeam

Well……….where do I start? I have loved water since being a toddler and have not stopped. I have sailed toppers, kayaked and windsurfed as a teenager and more recently, canoed the full length of the Belize River, rafted down the Zambezi conquering the rapids and completed in Lifesaving at university with the highlight attending the World Beach Lifesaving championships in Italy.

In the last few years, I  have rowed a Viking ship and sea kayaked in Finland, at Wik International camp 2006 (pictured), celebrated the Thailand water festival ‘ Loy Kratong’ with the local Guide Association (pictured) and this year had a day trip on our local narrowboat with the plan to take my Guides on a unit holiday.

Currently, I am a Guide Guider in Wollaton and work as a qualified lifeguard and swimming teacher in my spare time.

Water Safety Badges

Why not add water activities into you unit programme? This doesn’t mean you have to get wet. Check out the water safety badges for Brownies and Guides.

Water Safety Training

There are water safety modules within the walking training programme and as a stand alone module. If interested contact me and I am more than happy to organise a training for your unit, District or Division.

Narrow boating

Ever thought of taking your unit Narrow boating? Or are you already taking your unit? If so it would be great to hear from you.

If you are planning to take a narrow boat trip please comply with the ratios for your section with the minimum of 3 leaders being present in case of emergency and a qualified skipper. A Boating Holiday form (A/B) and holiday/camp form (A/A) should be completed cleared/ signed by Chloe Pilbeam, County Water Activities Advisor and your Division Commission at least 6 weeks prior to the event.

If you would like a copy of the “Narrow boating a Guide for Guiders”, a simple, frequently asked questions guide to Narrow boating, please e-mail me.

With the great success of the Leaders Narrow boat Taster Day this April we hope to plan another day next year. Also, if anyone is interested in gaining their Narrow boat skippers qualification, please contact me.

Water Activities

Are your unit taking part in water activities (canoeing, Sailing, rafting, wind surfing, swimming galas)? If you are please forward the details of any activity centres, facilities or contacts so I can compile a Water Activities library of resources for county use. Hopefully we can get more young people enjoying the outdoors and water activities.
